The Great Voyage - Trips 67-68, and the Wandertag Rangefinder
Sailing is perhaps my favorite form of travel in Your Land. So in my travels I have had a keen eye on what is the biggest sea. The biggest found by far connects Greenborough, Citadelle, Tenebris, Kedusriver, and Monsabor. From North to South it spans more than 6 km.
So, I decided to take a journey down its length starting in Greenborough. At this time I was also experimenting with recording video as a way to map without having to take screenshots. It's been an enjoyable method because I get to focus more on enjoying the game while mapping.
Wandertag Rangefinder
I've been enjoying the Wandertag destinations. It's fun to get a compass from Amanda and with no other information go track the location down. One of the challenges is in figuring out which is the nearest major city to travel to in order to cut down on the travel time.
My map has been helpful in figuring it out, but I've found there is a problem with estimating the ranges. When the destination is close to one of the cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) the mental math is fairly easy. However, when it's closer to one of the diagonal directions it's much harder to calculate the distance across a square grid.
So, I came up with the idea of drawing circles in the background to measure ranges. I've centered them not far from Amanda. For good measure I drew sixteen lines to help measure the compass direction.
I've done two tests. First, I thought about my target accuracy. I figured that if I could get within a 500 block radius that would be a reasonable target. Here's what that looks like on my map.
Next, I took some compasses to Haven Square near Amanda. I took aim and carefully estimated where I thought the location was and marked it on the map with a red circle.
Then I hiked out there from Pluton and marked the actual location in green. Pretty close!
But that's once. Could I do it again? Here's another test result. Not as good, but close enough in my book. The goal isn't really to pin point the location in advance. It's enough to just know what city is going to be the closest. And now for the final maps for now. I'm uploading two versions. One has the range finding circles in the background. The other removes them to reduce the clutter. Click on the image to enlarge it. Then right click and open the image in a new tab to see the full size image.
